LOS ANGELES, CA – Anna Strasberg, an actress and widow of renowned acting coach Lee Strasberg, has passed away at the age of 84, according to an announcement by The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. As the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute, Anna Strasberg played a significant role in shaping the home of the Method acting approach.
Her contributions to the Institute were highly regarded, transforming it into a prestigious institution for aspiring actors. The statement from The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute praised Anna for her lifelong commitment to The Method and her unwavering dedication to the Institute, which left an enduring impact on the world of acting and inspired countless talented individuals.
One of Anna Strasberg’s notable connections was with the iconic actress Marilyn Monroe. In Monroe’s will, she left 75 percent of her physical property and intellectual property rights to her acting coaches, Lee Strasberg and his second wife, Paula. After Lee’s passing, Anna inherited the Monroe estate, and she hired CMG Worldwide to represent the late actress.
Under Anna’s guidance, CMG Worldwide generated significant revenue and profits from commercial ventures related to Monroe. In 1999, Anna commissioned Christie’s to auction off Monroe memorabilia, including the famous flesh-colored gown she wore during her iconic “Happy Birthday” performance for President John F. Kennedy. The auction fetched over $1 million, with total sales of Monroe’s items reaching $13.4 million.
Anna’s licensing deal with the Monroe estate expired in 2010, and she subsequently entered into another agreement with Authentic Brands Group, reportedly worth $20-30 million. Throughout her career, Anna Strasberg made notable contributions to the entertainment industry, with appearances in films like “Stay Tuned for Terror” (1965) and TV shows such as “The Rat Patrol,” “The Felony Squad,” and “Judd for the Defense.”
Survivors include Anna’s sons, David and Adam, as well as her goddaughter, actress Drew Barrymore.
Anna Strasberg leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of acting and The Method. Her impact on the industry and her dedication to nurturing aspiring actors will be remembered by generations to come. MONACO and AP style BY+++ ADSON V2.1.03
