Hayes played the character of Doug Williams on the show for over five decades, starting in 1970. He met his wife, Susan Seaforth Hayes, while filming the series. The couple married in 1974 and their on-screen and off-screen romance captivated audiences.
Hayes began his career as a musician, achieving success with his hit song The Ballad of Davy Crockett before transitioning to acting. In February 1970, he landed his most notable role on NBC’s Days of Our Lives as a convict and lounge singer. Hayes remained with the show on and off until 2023, portraying the character of Doug Williams for over 50 years.
Hayes and Seaforth Hayes, who played the character of Julie Williams on the show, became a real-life couple and tied the knot in 1974. Their on-screen and off-screen chemistry resonated with viewers and even prompted a second wedding when their characters got married on television. The popularity of their romance led to a cover feature on Time magazine in 1976.
