Indianapolis, Indiana – The Toronto Raptors have struck a deal with the Indiana Pacers, sending two-time All-Star Pascal Siakam to Indiana. The trade, which was announced by the Pacers on Wednesday night, includes three first-round picks as well as Bruce Brown and Jordan Nwora going to the Raptors. The New Orleans Pelicans are also involved in the trade, sending Kira Lewis Jr. to Toronto.
As part of the deal, the Pacers will receive Pascal Siakam and a second-round pick from the Pelicans. In return, the Raptors will acquire Bruce Brown, Jordan Nwora, Kira Lewis Jr., and three first-round picks: one from the Pacers and two from the 2024 NBA Draft. The 2026 first-round pick from the Pacers is also part of the trade, but it is protected 1-4.
Siakam, who is set to become a free agent, is reportedly eager to negotiate a long-term deal with the Pacers in the upcoming summer. Siakam’s agent, Todd Ramasar, expressed excitement about the opportunity for Siakam to play alongside Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner under the leadership of coach Rick Carlisle.
Prior to finalizing the deal with the Pacers, the Raptors considered offers from other teams, including the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks. Talks with the Sacramento Kings eventually fell through due to their reluctance to include Keegan Murray in the trade. Siakam’s impending free agency gave him significant leverage in the negotiations, allowing him to influence potential trade partners.
The Pacers, currently holding the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 23-17, were in a strong position to make this impactful addition. With their own first-round picks and an additional pick from the Thunder in the 2024 draft, the Pacers also have the potential to create max cap space in the offseason, giving them an advantage over the Raptors in the trade talks.
Siakam, in his eighth season in the NBA, has been a key player for the Raptors, averaging 22.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game this season. He has been named an All-Star twice, made two All-NBA teams, and played a crucial role in the Raptors’ 2019 NBA championship win.
The Raptors have been active in the trade market this season, previously making a significant trade with the New York Knicks that sent OG Anunoby to New York in exchange for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley. These trades reflect the Raptors’ strategy of building a younger roster around forward Scottie Barnes, who has been a standout player for the team.
While the Pacers may not have been known for aggressively pursuing veteran talent in the past, the emergence of Tyrese Haliburton as a strong MVP candidate has prompted a shift in their roster-building approach.
