Breaking: Boston College’s Jeff Hafley to Join Green Bay Packers as Defensive Coordinator

Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley is set to take on the role of defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, sources confirmed. After four seasons at Boston College, Hafley has led the team to three bowl appearances. This year, the Eagles finished with a 7-6 record and secured a victory in the Fenway Bowl. Hafley’s decision to join the Packers is driven by his desire to focus on coaching football in the NFL, where he believes the game takes precedence over other responsibilities like fundraising and recruiting.

Hafley’s move marks the third instance this year of a college head coach leaving to become a coordinator. This trend highlights the disparities between top-tier schools and others in terms of resources, particularly in the context of Name, Image, and Likeness deals that have become crucial for recruiting and roster retention. In joining the Packers, Hafley is attracted by their promising young core and the opportunity to work alongside Packers coach Matt LaFleur, whom he has known for a long time.

While Hafley and LaFleur have not previously worked together, they share connections within the coaching world. Hafley served as the defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2014-2015 under then-head coach Mike Pettine, who had previously been LaFleur’s defensive coordinator in Green Bay. Additionally, Hafley worked with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who is a mentor to LaFleur. Hafley’s appointment as defensive coordinator will make him the third person to hold this position during LaFleur’s tenure as head coach.

The current defensive coaching staff for the Packers is under contract for the 2024 season, with no changes being made when the team parted ways with former defensive coordinator Joe Barry. As a result, there is a strong possibility that some or all of the existing coaches will continue working under Hafley.

Hafley brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having spent several years as an assistant coach in the NFL before becoming Ohio State’s defensive coordinator in 2019. He then took on the head coaching position at Boston College in 2020, navigating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite one losing season, Hafley achieved notable accomplishments during his time at Boston College, including three top recruiting classes, a victory over a ranked opponent, and the school’s first bowl win in six years.

Hafley’s decision to transition to the Green Bay Packers reflects the allure of coaching in the NFL and the opportunity to work with a respected franchise. The move signifies a new chapter in Hafley’s coaching career and the potential for further success in the professional football realm.
