Chelsea Handler addressed her ex-boyfriend Jo Koy’s hosting gig at the Golden Globes during her own hosting job at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. In her opening monologue, Handler made a reference to Koy’s disastrous performance at the Globes, where he repeatedly blamed his writers for the poorly received monologue. Handler joked, “Unfortunately Martin Scorsese isn’t here tonight, but that’s not going to stop me from letting everyone in this room know that I would toss him around like a little Italian meatball. Thank you for laughing at that, my writers wrote it.”
Koy’s monologue at the Golden Globes received a rare TVLine reader grade of “F.” During his opening remarks, Koy made fun of Ozempic use, complained about Oppenheimer’s length, prompted Meryl Streep to perform the Wakanda salute, and snuck in a dig at Taylor Swift. Koy commented on the camera shots of Swift, saying, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.” The camera cut to Swift, who appeared unamused, and this moment gained significant attention on social media.
Following the criticism of his performance, Koy acknowledged that the Swift joke fell flat and described the overall ceremony as an “off night.” He admitted to falling short of his expectations and wanting to give more of himself. Koy and Handler have a personal and professional history, with Koy being a recurring panelist on Handler’s show Chelsea Lately from 2007 to 2014 and the pair dating in 2021 before their split in 2022.
The Critics Choice Awards aired live from the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
