KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious in a frigid battle against the Miami Dolphins, with a final score of 26-7 at Arrowhead Stadium. The weather conditions were so extreme that even the mustache of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid froze over.
The kickoff temperature was a bone-chilling -4 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind chill of -20 degrees. This made it the fourth coldest game in National Football League history, according to the Peacock broadcast. Pictures of Reid with icicles in his facial hair quickly went viral on social media.
Despite the brutal conditions, the Kansas City offense started strong, marching down the field on their opening drive to score an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Rashee Rice. Rice finished the game with eight receptions for 130 yards.
From there, the Chiefs never looked back, shutting down the Dolphins’ offense completely. Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker had a flawless performance, going 4 for 4 on field goals. Running back Isiah Pacheco added a three-yard rushing touchdown to seal the game in the fourth quarter.
Mahomes had a solid performance, finishing the game with 262 passing yards and a touchdown. Notably, singer Taylor Swift braved the freezing temperatures to support her beau Travis Kelce, wearing a #87 Kelce jacket. Kelce had seven receptions for 71 yards.
By the end of the game, the temperature had dropped to -9 degrees, with a wind chill that felt like -28 degrees. Mahomes downplayed the cold weather, stating, “We’re in Kansas City, at Arrowhead. We are going to play in some games like this. So, our mentality was to come out here, play football and see what happens.”
While these were undoubtedly extreme conditions, it’s worth noting that they do not surpass the coldest NFL game on record, which was the December 1967 “Ice Bowl” in Wisconsin. During the “Ice Bowl,” the Green Bay Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys in -13 degree air temperature and a -48 wind chill.
In other playoff action, the Houston Texans secured a victory over the Cleveland Browns, with a final score of 45-14. Rookie Texans quarterback CJ Stroud had an outstanding performance, throwing for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Stroud’s three touchdown passes tied a rookie record in a playoff game, and he became the youngest quarterback to win a playoff game in NFL history.
Looking ahead, the NFL playoffs continue with exciting matchups on Sunday. The Green Bay Packers will face the Dallas Cowboys, and Matthew Stafford will make a return to the city where he started his NFL career as the Los Angeles Rams take on the Detroit Lions.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will battle the Buffalo Bills amid snowy conditions in Orchard Park, New York. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ triumph over the Miami Dolphins in freezing temperatures will be remembered as one of the coldest games in NFL history.
