LOS ANGELES (AP) — The highly anticipated historical epic “Oppenheimer” is set to debut on NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming platform. Viewers will soon have the opportunity to watch Christopher Nolan’s award-winning film from the comfort of their own homes.
The blockbuster, which was released in theaters on July 21, 2023, will be available for streaming on Peacock starting February 16. In addition to “Oppenheimer,” Peacock will also offer other Nolan-directed films such as “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Dunkirk,” “Inception,” and “Memento” beginning February 1.
“Oppenheimer” tells the story of the father of the atomic bomb, tracing his journey from being a physics student to his role as the director of the Manhattan Project. Starring Cillian Murphy as the lead, the film also features Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves Jr., Emily Blunt as Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The impressive supporting cast includes Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, and Casey Affleck, among others.
The film was a massive success at the box office, grossing $950 million worldwide. Reflecting on its performance, Nolan noted that audiences are seeking fresh and innovative content. In an interview with Variety, he said, “It’s clear from the box office that audiences are looking for things they haven’t seen before. We’ve been through a period where it was wonderfully reassuring for studio executives to feel that their franchise properties could go on forever and be predictably successful. But you can’t deny filmgoers’ desire for novelty.”
While “Oppenheimer” may be categorized as a biopic due to its subject matter, Nolan prefers to view it as a film that utilizes the conventions of heist and courtroom dramas to engage the audience. He believes that understanding these genres and their impact is essential for effective communication with viewers.
In summary, “Oppenheimer” is set to make its streaming debut on Peacock, allowing audiences to experience Nolan’s historical epic from the comfort of their own homes. Alongside this highly anticipated release, Peacock will also offer a selection of Nolan-directed films. Starring a talented ensemble cast, “Oppenheimer” has already proven its box office success, breaking records as the highest-grossing biopic to date.
