Columbus, Ohio – Caleb Downs, a former freshman safety for the Alabama Crimson Tide, will be transferring to Ohio State, according to a source close to the situation. Downs was the leading tackler for Alabama this past season, making a remarkable 107 tackles and becoming the first true freshman in program history to achieve this feat. Ranked as a five-star prospect in the class of 2023, he was highly sought after by colleges across the country, ultimately choosing Alabama. However, with his decision to transfer, Downs has now opted to join the Buckeyes.
Downs entered the transfer portal on January 17, prompting speculation about his future destination. Many believed he would end up at Georgia, where his former defensive backs coach, Travaris Robinson, recently joined the coaching staff. Despite efforts from the new Alabama head coach, Kalen DeBoer, to bring Robinson back to Alabama, he decided to remain with the Georgia Bulldogs. It was thought that this connection could have led to Downs choosing Georgia, but that is no longer the case.
Interestingly, Ohio State was a notable contender for Downs during his initial recruitment process, but Alabama won out. Now, the Buckeyes have been given a second chance to recruit him, and after an in-home visit with Downs and his family, they successfully convinced him to join their program. This addition will undoubtedly bolster Ohio State’s defense, which has shown significant improvement in its second year under coordinator Jim Knowles.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Downs is expected to make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes. His arrival adds to a list of impactful transfers for Ohio State, including quarterback Will Howard from Kansas State, running back Quinshon Judkins from Ole Miss, and center Seth McLaughlin from Alabama.
This transfer marks a significant move for Downs as he departs from a successful Alabama program and seeks new opportunities at Ohio State. Only time will tell how he will adapt to his new environment and contribute to the Buckeyes’ continued success on the football field.
