Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr. Leads Gators to Stunning Upset Victory Over Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – In an exhilarating showdown on Wednesday night, the Florida Gators basketball team pulled off an impressive upset over the 10th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena. The Gators, led by junior guard Walter Clayton Jr., rallied from behind to secure a thrilling victory in overtime. This win marked Florida’s 12th road victory in the history of their series with Kentucky.

Clayton Jr. was the star of the game, showcasing his skills with a career-high 23 points and a remarkable seven 3-pointers. His most crucial shots included a game-tying 3-pointer to force overtime and a go-ahead 3-pointer that sealed the Gators’ triumph. With this win, Coach Todd Golden earned his first true signature road victory, propelling Florida to their first Quadrant 1 win of the season.

Contributing to Florida’s success, graduate-transfer point guard Zyon Pullin demonstrated his versatility by scoring 21 points and distributing seven assists. Meanwhile, graduate-transfer forward Tyrese Samuel added 22 points and 13 rebounds, securing his seventh double-double of the season. The Gators fought relentlessly throughout the game, seizing the lead for the first time in overtime and never relinquishing it.

Despite trailing by four points in the final seconds of regulation, the Gators staged a remarkable comeback to force overtime. With three seconds left on the clock, Clayton Jr. confidently sank a game-tying 3-pointer, leading the Gators into their second overtime victory of the season.

Florida’s triumph was aided by their efficient shooting, as they scored 41 percent from the field and made 12 of 28 attempts from beyond the arc. They also dominated the rebounding battle, outmatching Kentucky with 50 rebounds to 48. The Wildcats, led by freshman standout Reed Sheppard, put up a valiant effort but fell just short. Sheppard scored 24 points and played all 45 minutes in just his second start.

This win against the 10th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats is a significant milestone for the Florida Gators. It marks their first road victory over a top-10 opponent since 2003, adding a gold-star Quadrant 1 victory to their postseason resume. The Gators’ winning streak continues to flourish, solidifying their position in the SEC standings as they head into the second half of the season.

Looking ahead, the Florida Gators will face the Texas A&M Aggies on the road this Saturday. Texas A&M will be seeking redemption after a close loss to Ole Miss. The Gators will be hoping to end their four-game losing streak against the Aggies, as each previous encounter has been decided by the slimmest of margins. On the other hand, the Kentucky Wildcats will host the fifth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers in their upcoming game.
