Heroic Principal Dies from Injuries in Iowa School Shooting: Wife Reports

Perry, Iowa – The principal of Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, who heroically saved students during a mass shooting earlier this month, has died from his injuries, according to his wife. The shooting occurred on January 4, when a 17-year-old student opened fire, resulting in the death of one sixth-grade student and the injury of seven others, including Principal Dan Marburger.

Marburger’s wife, Elizabeth Marburger, announced the news of his passing on a GoFundMe campaign that was set up for his recovery. She expressed gratitude for the 10 days they were able to spend together after the shooting, saying, “He fought hard and gave us 10 days that we will treasure forever.”

Marburger had been hailed as a hero for his brave actions during the attack. His daughter, Claire Marburger, shared on social media shortly after the shooting that it was not surprising to hear of her father’s selfless acts to protect the students. She said, “It is absolutely zero surprise to hear he tried to approach and talk the shooter down and distract him long enough for some students to get out of the cafeteria.”

The Iowa Department of Public Safety commended Marburger for his selflessness and said he had placed himself in harm’s way to protect his students. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Marburger.
