Iowa State Upsets Undefeated Houston in Big 12 Clash, Ends Perfect Streak

AMES, Iowa — In a stunning upset, Iowa State handed No. 2 Houston their first loss of the season with a 57-53 victory on Tuesday. The Cyclones put their aggressive defense on full display, forcing Houston into 16 turnovers. Guard Tamin Lipsey led Iowa State with 14 points, while freshman Milan Momcilovic added 11 points, continuing his impressive first year with the team.

Iowa State wasted no time asserting their dominance, jumping out to a 14-0 lead before Houston even scored a point. The Cougars struggled to find their rhythm throughout the game, committing 17 turnovers and shooting just 3-of-13 from beyond the arc. Despite strong performances from guards Jamal Shead and Emanuel Sharp, who combined for 34 points, Houston was unable to overcome their deficiencies.

The victory marks Iowa State’s 14th home win against a top-10 team since the 2011-2012 season, second only to Kansas in Division I. It is also their seventh win against a top-10 opponent since the start of the 2022-2023 season, the most in Division I.

The game highlighted the stark difference in competition between the American Athletic Conference (AAC), where Houston previously played, and the Big 12. While Houston has been dominant in the AAC in recent years, their transition to the Big 12 has proved to be a challenge. However, the Cougars’ physicality and discipline make them a formidable contender in their new conference.

Iowa State’s defense was the key to their success against Houston, as they currently rank third in adjusted efficiency ratings. Their ability to force turnovers and pressure their opponents has made them a formidable force. Even when their offense is inconsistent, their defense consistently delivers.

With Houston’s loss, there are now no undefeated teams remaining in the college basketball season. This eliminates the possibility of an undefeated national champion and continues the trend of the last undefeated team falling relatively early in the season.
