LOS ANGELES – James Gunn’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the writer and director of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” seemed unlikely after his firing by Disney in 2018. However, Warner Bros. promptly took advantage of the situation, securing Gunn to helm “The Suicide Squad.” Despite backlash from fans and Marvel actors, including intervention from Marvel Studios, Gunn eventually made a triumphant comeback to the MCU. In a recent response to a fan on Threads, Gunn addressed the speculation surrounding the delayed release of “Vol. 3,” confirming that Marvel had made no changes and attributing the delay to personal struggles with wrapping up the project. Gunn admitted that he had experienced some difficulty while writing, but credited his revival to the energizing experience of directing “The Suicide Squad.” His time in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has been productive, as he has also written episodes for “Creature Commandos,” “Peacemaker,” and the upcoming “Superman: Legacy.” Gunn’s firing and subsequent rehiring served as a transformative journey, and he expressed gratitude for the support he received from his colleagues during that challenging period. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is now available for streaming on Disney+.
