LONDON – Buckingham Palace announced on Wednesday that Britain’s King Charles III will undergo a “corrective procedure” in the hospital next week. The 75-year-old monarch sought treatment for an enlarged prostate, a benign condition. As a result, his public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation. This includes a series of meetings and events in Scotland that were scheduled for Friday and have now been postponed.
A Buckingham Palace source revealed that Charles wanted to share the details of his diagnosis to raise awareness and encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked, in line with public health advice.
The news of Charles’ health comes on the same day it was announced that Kate, the Princess of Wales, has undergone planned abdominal surgery and will be hospitalized for up to two weeks. Kate, 42, the wife of Prince William, Charles’ eldest son and heir to the throne, will take a break from her busy schedule of public appearances and private engagements.
Charles ascended to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2002. Queen Elizabeth II had held the throne for a record 70 years and was 96 years old when she passed away. Charles, on the other hand, was a seasoned royal, having represented the country on numerous international trips prior to his coronation at the age of 73.
Throughout his reign, Charles has faced various challenges, including controversies surrounding his brother Prince Andrew’s connection to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, the publication of Prince Harry’s book, “Spare,” last year brought unwanted attention to the royal family.
The health concerns of both King Charles III and the Princess of Wales highlight the vulnerability of the royal family and their need for medical attention, just like anyone else. The public will be watching closely as their recoveries progress and as they resume their duties in service to the country.
