Los Angeles native LaKeith Stanfield, known for his roles in “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Sorry to Bother You,” has joined Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming crime thriller “Play Dirty.” The film, directed by Shane Black, is an adaptation of Donald E. Westlake’s Parker novels and is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
Wahlberg stars as a professional thief who is betrayed and left for dead. Seeking revenge, he embarks on a dangerous journey that includes a high-stakes heist and a confrontation with a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s wealthiest man. Stanfield will portray Grofield, the thief’s partner and a talented con artist.
The screenplay for “Play Dirty” was written by Black, Charles Mondry, and Anthony Bagarozzi. Jules Daly and Marc Toberoff are serving as producers, with Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey of Team Downey also executive producing. The project was previously attached to producer Joel Silver, who was dismissed due to allegations of verbal abuse.
Stanfield’s involvement in “Play Dirty” follows his critically acclaimed performance in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” for which he received an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category. He also appeared in Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” and gained recognition for his work in the FX series “Atlanta.”
