New York City, New York – The New York Mets have reached an agreement with Pete Alonso on a new one-year contract, as the first baseman enters his final season of team control. Although the financial terms of the contract have not been confirmed by the club, a source reports that Alonso agreed to a $20.5 million deal. This comes after earning $14.5 million through arbitration last season.
Alonso, who compiled a .217 batting average with 46 home runs and 118 RBIs in the previous season, will now play under the Mets’ control for one more year. While both sides have expressed an interest in a long-term extension, there have been no indications of any imminent agreement. However, president of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledges Alonso’s value to the team and hopes to keep him in the Met’s lineup.
In the event that Alonso reaches free agency in the following offseason, the Mets will retain the option to re-sign him. This contract agreement follows the Mets’ previous deals with DJ Stewart and brings their arbitration-eligible player count to nine. Alongside Alonso, the Mets have also agreed to terms with Adrian Houser, David Peterson, Joey Lucchesi, Drew Smith, Phil Bickford, and Tyrone Taylor.
Houser, a starting pitcher, has secured a $5.05 million contract, as reported by various sources. Peterson, another starting pitcher, agreed to a $2.15 million deal, and the left-handed pitcher Lucchesi settled for a $1.65 million contract. Smith, a reliever, reached an agreement for a $2.225 million contract. However, Bickford has not yet come to terms with the Mets, with a discrepancy arising between his $900,000 filing and the team’s counter-offer of $815,000. Taylor, an outfielder, will earn $2.025 million after finalizing his contract.
As the anticipation for the upcoming season continues, the Mets have secured key players, including Pete Alonso, for their final year of team control. Fans and analysts alike await developments regarding potential long-term extensions for Alonso, as his performance on the field remains integral to the team’s success.
