LOS ANGELES – The iconic creature from the classic movie “Creature from the Black Lagoon” is making a comeback, but this time in the form of a comic book. Skybound Entertainment, led by Robert Kirkman, known for his work on “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible” comics, has partnered with Universal Products & Experiences to bring the Creature back to life. The four-issue limited series, titled “Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives,” will be written by Dan Watters and Ram V, with artwork by Matthew Roberts and Dave Stewart as the colorist.
Unlike a previous adaptation in 1993 by Dark Horse Comics, this comic will not be a direct adaptation of the original 1954 black and white movie. Instead, it will be a modern-day tale that connects to the original film, featuring new characters such as journalist Kate Marsden and serial killer Darwin Collier. The story follows Marsden as she hunts a notorious serial killer in the heart of the Amazon and encounters the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The partnership between Skybound and Universal aims to bring together renowned comic industry names with iconic horror monsters. The first issue of the limited series is set to hit comic shops on April 24, following the success of the well-received “Dracula” limited series by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds.
Each book in the Universal Monsters line will have a unique flavor, with different creative teams bringing their own perspectives to the iconic horror characters. “Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives” is positioned to appeal to both new readers and longtime fans, offering a fresh take on the beloved Gill-Man.
This new comic series is an exciting opportunity for fans to revisit the Creature from the Black Lagoon in a modern context, while also introducing new elements and characters to the story. The partnership between Skybound and Universal demonstrates the ongoing popularity and enduring appeal of classic horror monsters.
