LOS ANGELES – Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse voice actors Hailee Steinfeld, Daniel Kaluuya, and Shameik Moore recently presented the best screenplay award at the Golden Globes, but it turns out that the introduction they delivered was not written by studio executives, as they claimed. Instead, it was the work of Spider-Verse writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lord expressed his satisfaction that the cast of their movie, which includes Oscar nominees, was asked to present such a prestigious award. He emphasized the importance of making them look great and wanted to create something playful that would also honor the category. The writing duo, known for their work on films like The Lego Movie and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, as well as for Apple TV+’s The Afterparty, crafted eight different options for the introduction, seeking input from friends up until the Friday before the Golden Globes.
The Spider-Verse team rehearsed all of the options and ultimately settled on the “studio executives” bit, which resonated with the audience. The writers noted that the actors were able to play it straight while being in on the joke. The segment also cleverly acknowledged last year’s writers strike, which was appreciated by the head writers of the Globes.
The audience, including the executives who supported Spider-Verse, thoroughly enjoyed the introduction, and the film’s directors, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, and Joaquim Dos Santos, expressed their amusement at the “hilarious moment.” Powers highlighted how the segment aligned with the spirit of the film and showcased the great personalities of the actors involved.
When asked why they attributed the speech to studio executives rather than AI, Miller dismissed the idea of artificial intelligence involvement in script writing, calling it “comedy clam” and something hackneyed. He made it clear that they have no love for AI and want to keep it far away from their writing process.
The cleverly crafted introduction at the Golden Globes demonstrated Lord and Miller’s knack for creating playful yet impactful moments that resonated with the audience. Their intention to make the actors look great while honoring the category was successfully achieved, leaving a lasting impression on viewers and adding another memorable moment to the Spider-Verse legacy.
