Atlanta, GA – The search for the leading role in the upcoming Supergirl movie, titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” is nearing its conclusion. After a series of screen tests held in Atlanta, the field has been narrowed down to two actresses: Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly. Alcock, known for her work in HBO’s House of the Dragon as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Donnelly, who starred in Disney Channel’s hit musical franchise Zombies, both impressed the DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran during the auditions.
Gunn and Safran were brought on board by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022 to revamp and reshape the DC Studios movies. Supergirl is a crucial part of their plans as they assemble their slate of films centered around DC Comics characters. The character of Supergirl, who will first appear in Gunn’s Superman movie, called “Superman: Legacy,” will then headline her own standalone film. The movie is based on a comic book mini-series by Tom King that aimed to redefine Supergirl as a complex character with a unique backstory.
In a video released on social media, Gunn explained that Supergirl’s backstory diverges from Superman’s. While Superman was raised on Earth by loving parents, Supergirl grew up on a piece of Krypton and witnessed the devastating demise of her home planet. This experience has shaped her into a more hardened and cynical character. The script for the Supergirl movie is being written by actress and playwright Ana Nogueira, but a director has not yet been attached to the project.
The casting search for Supergirl has been a lengthy process, with other actors such as Cailee Spaeny and Emilia Jones previously considered for the role. As the field narrows down to Alcock and Donnelly, the decision-making process intensifies. The chosen actress will play a pivotal role in Gunn and Safran’s plans for the future of DC Studios, positioning Supergirl as a key component in their vision for the DC Comics cinematic universe.
As fans eagerly await the announcement of the final casting choice, the anticipation for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” continues to grow. With the talent and expertise of the creative team behind this project, viewers can expect a fresh and compelling take on the iconic superhero character.
