LOS ANGELES – Director James Gunn plans to bring a comedic twist to the iconic superhero in his upcoming film “Superman: Legacy,” according to actress Rachel Brosnahan. Brosnahan, who will portray Lois Lane in the movie, recently revealed that the new Superman, played by David Corenswet, will have a sense of humor. She described her character as “feisty, marvelous, and fiercely intelligent.”
Brosnahan expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating with Gunn and the entire production team, noting that everyone involved is passionate about Superman. She emphasized the love and care put into the film, stating, “I think this Superman will have a sense of humor.” The actress added that the team is excited to put their own spin on the beloved material while honoring it.
Gunn, known for infusing his previous works with comedy, is expected to bring a lighter tone to “Superman: Legacy.” This marks a significant departure from the last portrayal of Superman on the big screen, which featured a more serious and gritty tone under the direction of Zack Snyder. Henry Cavill previously played the character in Snyder’s films.
“Superman: Legacy” will not only introduce the new Superman but also feature a diverse ensemble of comic book characters. The cast includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. The film is set to launch James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.
Reflecting on the current landscape of superhero films, Gunn acknowledged the presence of superhero fatigue. He attributed this fatigue to the lack of focus on character development and storytelling. Gunn emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and appeal of beloved characters like Superman, Batman, and Iron Man.
“Superman: Legacy” is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025, by Warner Bros. The film aims to rejuvenate and reinvigorate the superhero genre with its fresh take on the Man of Steel.
