Taapsee Pannu Speaks Out Against Controversial Blockbuster ‘Animal’ and Bollywood’s Societal Context

Mumbai, India – Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu has shared her thoughts on the controversial blockbuster film ‘Animal,’ starring Ranbir Kapoor. In an interview with Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel, Pannu discussed the societal context in which Bollywood operates. Although she has not seen the film, Pannu expressed reservations about its content and highlighted the need for responsible filmmaking.

‘Animal’ has proven to be a massive financial success, grossing over ₹912 crore worldwide. However, it has faced criticism for glorifying misogynistic and violent behavior. When asked about the film, Pannu acknowledged that she had heard a lot about it but emphasized that she did not align herself with extremist opinions. She urged against comparing Bollywood to Hollywood, emphasizing the different audiences and cultural contexts.

Reflecting on the influence of films on society, Pannu stated that movies like ‘Animal’ should exist, but with a distinct goal – to positively influence society. She stressed the importance of individuals having a strong moral compass and not being unduly influenced by the content they consume, acknowledging that this is often not the case.

As a Bollywood actor, Pannu feels a responsibility to exercise her power and make choices that align with her values. While she respects the freedom of choice for other actors, Pannu personally would refrain from participating in a film like ‘Animal’ due to the societal reality she sees and the need to uphold her moral beliefs.

This isn’t the first time Pannu has spoken out against films with problematic themes. She previously critiqued the misogynistic portrayal of romantic relationships in the film ‘Kabir Singh,’ directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga.

‘Animal,’ produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Murad Khetani, and Pranay Reddy Vanga, has been criticized for its portrayal of extreme violence and toxic masculinity. The film revolves around the strained father-son relationship between characters played by Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. Rashmika Mandanna and Bobby Deol also have significant roles in the movie.

Pannu’s stance highlights the ongoing debate within Bollywood about the responsibility of filmmakers and actors to influence society positively. The discussion about content and its impact continues as filmmakers face increasing scrutiny for the messages they propagate through their films.
