Los Angeles, CA – Actor Ted Danson has addressed speculation about a possible reunion with his “Cheers” castmates. Danson, best known for his role as Sam Malone on the hit sitcom, spoke about the potential reunion while attending the red carpet event for the final season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” However, he quickly shut down any hopes of a reboot, pointing out that the cast are “a bunch of older folks” now.
Danson recently reunited with his “Cheers” co-stars Kelsey Grammer, Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger, and George Wendt at the 2024 Emmy Awards. Shelley Long and Woody Harrelson, however, were not in attendance. Danson expressed his admiration for Harrelson’s performance in a play in London, but offered no insight into Long’s absence.
Throughout the years, rumors of a feud between Danson and Long have circulated, although both actors have attributed it to differing acting styles. In a 1987 interview with People, Danson said he wouldn’t say anything negative about his co-star, admitting that their relationship had its ups and downs. Long echoed this sentiment, stating that their energy was focused on their work, which paid off.
During the Emmy Awards reunion, Danson and Grammer joined Perlman, Wendt, and Ratzenberger on stage to present awards for Best Directing and Best Writing in a Comedy Series. The cast received a warm reception from the audience, with Ratzenberger describing it as a “long overdue class reunion” and Grammer expressing his regrets that Long wasn’t there to celebrate with them.
Danson has spoken about his working relationship with Long in the past, sharing that her process sometimes frustrated him, but he found joy in their shared moments on stage. Grammer, too, expressed his disappointment at Long’s absence, emphasizing the special memories and pride they all feel for the show.
While fans may be eager for a full “Cheers” reunion, it seems unlikely at this point. Nonetheless, the recent gathering of the cast members at the Emmy Awards provided a nostalgic moment for both the actors and their devoted audience.
