The Bear and Other Hit Series Navigate Confusing Emmy Season with Different Seasons Competing for Awards

Los Angeles, CA – Following its success at the Golden Globes, the comedy series “The Bear” is now aiming to replicate its achievements at the upcoming 75th Emmy Awards. However, there is a twist – while Season 2 will be up for awards at other major ceremonies throughout the year, it is actually Season 1 that will be vying for the Emmy accolades. This situation arises due to the delayed Emmys caused by last year’s writers and actors strikes. As a result, several shows find themselves in similar predicaments.

Typically, eligibility for the Golden Globes and other guild awards aligns with the calendar year. However, the Emmys operate on a different schedule, with an eligibility period running from June to May. This means that the Emmys ceremonies mark the end of the awards season for any given season of TV.

In the case of “The Bear,” Season 1 premiered in June 2022 and won two Golden Globes in January 2023, at the 80th ceremony. If the Emmys had taken place in September as intended, Season 1 would have completed its awards run before Season 2 premiered in June 2023. This would have prevented the two seasons from competing against each other within the same week.

More shows, such as “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Crown,” face similar challenges. “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2 will be in contention at the Emmys, while Season 3 has already competed at the Golden Globes and will participate in the upcoming SAG Awards. Meanwhile, “The Crown” star Elizabeth Debicki won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the show’s final season but is nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Emmys for her performance in Season 5. Season 6 of “The Crown” will become eligible later this year and could potentially align with the 76th Emmy Awards.

This season confusion will ultimately be resolved when the 76th Emmys take place, allowing these series to compete with their most recent seasons. Regarding “The Bear,” production for Season 3 is slated to begin early in 2024, potentially setting up a summer release ahead of the 76th Emmys. Nonetheless, the awards run for Season 2 should conclude before Season 3 competes.

In the meantime, viewers can catch the 75th Emmy Awards airing on Fox on Monday, January 15 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
