Toxic caterpillars cause heart attack scare for Jamie Dornan during Portugal trip

Lisbon, Portugal – Jamie Dornan, the actor known for his role in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” was hospitalized in Portugal after experiencing heart attack symptoms caused by toxic caterpillars, according to a friend who was also affected by the same symptoms last year. Gordon Smart, Dornan’s friend, shared the story on the podcast “The Good, the Bad and the Unexpected.” Initially, they believed their symptoms were a result of overindulgence the night before.

To their surprise, they discovered that their symptoms were caused by contact with processionary caterpillars, which are known for their toxicity. These caterpillars have thousands of tiny hairs that contain an irritating protein, which can lead to painful skin, eye, and throat irritations. Smart shared that on their first day of vacation, he sensed tingling in his left hand and tickling in his left arm, which made him fear he was having a heart attack.

After seeking medical attention, Smart was discharged from the hospital. However, upon his return to the hotel, he discovered that Dornan had also been admitted and was hooked up to medical equipment. Dornan had experienced numbness in his limbs and had found himself in the back of an ambulance. Paramedics even asked him for a selfie before he left the hospital.

The doctor later informed Smart that their symptoms were likely caused by the toxic caterpillars found on golf courses in southern Portugal. These caterpillars have been known to be fatal to dogs and have caused heart attacks in men in their 40s. Reflecting on the incident, Smart expressed gratitude for coming out of the ordeal alive, attributing their symptoms to the poisonous caterpillars rather than other possible causes.

Page Six has reached out to Dornan’s representatives for further comment on the incident.
