Ennis, Alaska – Fans of the hit television series “True Detective” are buzzing with excitement over the possibility of a crossover after a direct link to season one was revealed in the latest episode of “Night Country”. The fourth season of the HBO anthology series premiered on Sunday, receiving mostly positive reviews. However, some viewers have expressed concerns about the opening titles and the supernatural themes of the show.
Set in Ennis, Alaska, the new season follows two detectives, Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, portrayed by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of eight men from a research station. Despite the apparent differences in the DNA of this season compared to previous ones, fans were pleasantly surprised by several references to season one in the opening moments of episode two. Specifically, the character Rustin “Rust” Cohle, played by Matthew McConaughey in the first season, was directly linked to the events of “Night Country”.
In season one, Rust mentions that he grew up in Alaska and that his father, Travis, lived there and battled leukemia. In “Night Country” episode two, it is revealed that the ghostly presence leading one of the characters, Rose, to the missing bodies in the snow is her former lover, Travis Cohle. Rose explains that instead of succumbing to leukemia, Travis walked out onto the ice and froze to death. The connection becomes even more intriguing as both Travis and Rose have a link to the spiral symbol, which was prominently featured in season one.
The spiral symbol, which was associated with the Yellow King and an evil cult in the first season, reappears in “Night Country”. It is discovered etched onto the forehead of one of the corpses and painted on the roof of a van belonging to a missing character. It appears that Rust’s obsession with the symbol from the first season may be carried over into the current season.
While the crossover between the two seasons remains speculative, the fact that Matthew McConaughey is listed as an executive producer for “Night Country” further fuels the possibility of Rust’s appearance. Additionally, there are cryptic references to the Yellow King, a major element from season one, in the latest season.
Fans are eagerly awaiting future episodes of “Night Country” to see if these connections to season one continue to unfold. The fourth season of “True Detective” is available to watch on Max in the US and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
