True Detective Viewers Express Disappointment Over Choice of Opening Song

Los Angeles, California – Viewers of the HBO drama series, “True Detective,” have expressed a common complaint following the release of the show’s fourth season. Titled “True Detective: Night Country,” the anthology series premiered on January 14th, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the lead roles. Despite positive reviews of the new season, one recurring criticism targets the choice of song used in the opening credits of the show.

Each season of “True Detective,” including the critically panned second installment, has been commended for its title track. The first season featured The Handsome Family’s “Far from Any Road,” while Leonard Cohen’s “Nevermind” from his 2014 album “Popular Problems” served as the opening song for the second season. In the third season, Cassandra Wilson’s cover of Son House’s “Death Letter” greeted viewers. This placed significant pressure on the fourth season to deliver a captivating song choice.

However, viewers quickly discovered that the song selected for “True Detective: Night Country” is Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend.” While the quality of the track itself is not under question, viewers are disappointed by its overuse in various other films and TV shows. Most recently, the song was featured in the trailer for “Madame Web,” a Spider-Man spin-off film, as well as in the trailers for “Carnival Row” and “Night Swim.” It has also been used in TV shows like “The Society,” “Dickinson,” and “Big Mouth,” as well as in the films “Kimi” and “Sing 2.”

Some viewers expressed their desire for new and original songs in the show’s intros, stating that the repeated use of the Billie Eilish track has become tiresome. The dissatisfaction with the opening credits song adds an interesting layer to the overall reception of the series. Despite this criticism, “True Detective” continues to receive praise for its central performances and has been compared favorably to its critically acclaimed first season.

“True Detective: Night Country” is available for viewers in the US on HBO and in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW. Overall, while the choice of song has raised eyebrows among fans, the season itself is receiving positive reviews and maintaining the attention of its dedicated audience.
