Violation of Rights: The Camp App Removes Spaces Related to BTS and Takes Corrective Measures

SEOUL, South Korea – The operator of The Camp, a popular app for sending letters of consolation to military personnel, has admitted to violating rights and has implemented corrective measures. The app, known for its association with global superstars BTS, has taken action to address its infringement on certain company rights.

In an announcement on the app’s official bulletin board, The Camp acknowledged, “Due to issues with the management of our camps, we inadvertently infringed upon the rights of a particular company. We have promptly taken corrective action.” The operator emphasized its commitment to rectify the situation.

Additionally, The Camp stated that it will be suspending the operation of all camps associated with Big Hit Music, the agency representing BTS, in response to a request from the company. The suspension, effective March 9th, will apply to camps created by users under the names of Big Hit artists. The operator emphasized that they will assume legal responsibility if they use the names of Big Hit Music artists without proper authorization in the future.

This development follows an official statement by HYBE, the parent company of Big Hit Music, on January 9th. The statement addressed the violation of publicity rights and indicated that evidence had been provided to The Camp’s operator regarding the unauthorized use of BTS’s name and likeness. HYBE expressed their commitment to intensify monitoring and take strict actions against any infringements on publicity rights used for commercial purposes.

Notably, The Camp operator not only created individual community spaces for each BTS member but also sold dolls bearing the members’ real names through their commerce channel, without authorization. In response, HYBE directly issued a content certification to address the issue, prompting the operator to promptly implement corrective measures.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by artists and their agencies in protecting their intellectual property rights. This violation of publicity rights carries significant consequences, as it involves substantial investments of capital and effort by both the company and the artists. While The Camp has taken steps to rectify the situation, further measures may be necessary to ensure the proper use of intellectual property associated with artists and their agencies.

As the investigation into this infringement continues, it serves as a reminder to both app operators and users to respect intellectual property rights and obtain proper authorization when utilizing the names, likenesses, and intellectual property of artists. Protecting these rights is vital for the industry and the artists themselves, who rely on their creative output to entertain and inspire millions worldwide.
