“When the Light Breaks”: New Film by Renowned Icelandic Director Rúnar Rúnarsson Gains Paris-Based The Party Film Sales’ Support

PARIS, France – Paris-based film sales company, The Party Film Sales, has announced its involvement with Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson’s upcoming project, “When the Light Breaks.” The film has been selected for Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market’s works in progress session. Rúnarsson, known for his critically acclaimed films set against Iceland’s stunning landscapes, gained international recognition with his Oscar-nominated short film “Two Birds” in 2008. Since then, he has continued to deliver poetic and thought-provoking work, such as “Volcano” and “Echo.”

“When the Light Breaks” explores the director’s personal experiences of grief and loss. Rúnarsson draws from his own encounters with tragedy to create a universal story that captures the complex emotions that arise when someone unexpectedly passes away. The film delves into a short period of time where contradictory emotions coexist, from laughter to tears, and joy to sorrow.

The storyline of “When the Light Breaks” centers around Una, the protagonist who navigates her personal behavior and dilemma. Una finds herself on the outskirts of the events unfolding around her, although she is at the heart of everything. Carrying a secret, she struggles to claim her rightful space in the midst of grief, while also maintaining her dignity.

Actress Elín Hall, known for her role in “Let Me Fall,” takes on the titular role of Una in the film. Rúnarsson praises Hall for her ability to embody both strength and tenderness, allowing her to show rather than tell, which is essential to the character’s essence.

Visually, Rúnarsson aims to create an experience of realness with the use of 16mm film. The rawness and texture of the medium capture the setting and the internal turmoil and strength of the main character, while adding a touch of softness that enhances Una’s vulnerability.

Film industry professionals, including Samuel Blanc and Estelle De Araujo from The Party Film Sales, and co-producer Mike Downey, commend Rúnarsson for his unique and compelling vision. They highlight the film’s exploration of light and its portrayal of the collective’s strength and power with remarkable precision and tenderness.

“When the Light Breaks” is currently in post-production and has received support from various organizations, including the Icelandic Film Centre, Eurimages, and Creative Europe MEDIA. It is anticipated that the film will be released in the summer of 2024.

In addition to “When the Light Breaks,” The Party Film Sales will also be presenting Erlingur Thoroddsen’s thriller “Cold” at the Göteborg market. The film, which was Iceland’s fifth biggest box office hit of 2023, further showcases the company’s commitment to supporting and promoting Icelandic cinema.
